Transmission system operator Amprion GmbH has selected cable manufacturer Prysmian SpA (BIT:PRY) as the preferred bidder for offshore grid connection projects BalWin1 and BalWin2 and underground cable project DC34 in Germany.
The cable job is valued at around EUR 4.5 billion (USD 4.9bn) in aggregate with contracts expected to be finalised by January 15, 2024, Amprion said on Tuesday.
The three transmission projects will support the transport of electricity generated by wind farms in the North Sea to consumers in western and southern Germany.
Planned with a capacity of up to 2 GW each, BalWin1 and BalWin2 will transmit power from the offshore wind farms that will be built in the BalWin Cluster in the German North Sea to the grid connection points in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. BalWin1 will require about 1,070 km (664.9 miles) of cables to cover a 358 km route, while BalWin2 will involve the installation of 1,100 km of cables over a route of 376 km.
The two power line connections are planned to go online in 2029 and 2030, respectively.
The third project, DC34, is part of the Rhein-Main-Link. It will connect substations in Lower Saxony and Hesse to transmit up to 2 GW of energy produced by the offshore wind farms to the Rhine-Main metropolitan area. A total of 2,100 km of cables will be needed for this route.
Amprion is also working on the BorWin4 and DolWin4 offshore power links, which are scheduled to go online in 2028.
