Neptun Werft, part of shipbuilding company Meyer Group, and Belgian steel construction company Smulders are teaming up to build offshore converter platforms at Neptun Werft’s Warnemuende site in Germany.
The companies said this week they plan to set up Neptun Smulders Offshore Renewables and Neptun Smulders Engineering, which will design and manufacture the platforms. Subject to regulatory approval, the joint venture is expected to start operations during the first quarter of 2024.
The new company will initially create up to 100 jobs in Warnemuende.
The initiative is set to create strategic production capacities for converter platforms needed for the energy transition in Germany. “We are combining the MEYER Group’s expertise in large scale complex shipbuilding with Smulders’ offshore experience in a unique way to enable the jump to the new 2 GW offshore converter platform size with high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology,” remarked Jan Meyer.
