Canadian renewables developer and operator BluEarth Renewables said today its 145-MW Hand Hills wind farm in Alberta has started commercial operations.
Located near Drumheller, the wind power plant consists of 29 turbines and produces enough power to meet the needs of 68,000 local homes each year.
A ground-breaking ceremony for the project was held in June 2022. In April 2021, BluEarth signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), under which Shell Energy North America (Canada) Inc will buy the electricity and associated emission offsets from a 100-MW portion of the wind park.
BluEarth has been developing the project since it was acquired from Joss Wind Power Inc in 2012.
The company says it has over 1 GW of projects in operation, under construction and contracted pre-construction. It is also advancing a development pipeline of over 4 GW of wind and 4.5 GW of solar and storage projects across North America.
