Brazil’s power sector regulator Aneel announced on Wednesday that the country connected 4.5 GW of solar and wind power generating capacity to the grid during the first half of 2023.
The wind power plants that were brought online during the first half of the year have a collective capacity of 2.3 GW, representing 44.53% of the overall increase in power generation. These new wind farms are spread across 67 locations.
Solar contributed 2.2 GW, while new thermal parks added a combined capacity of 521.4 MW. Hydropower plants that went live during this period generate a combined 132.9 MW.
In June alone, Brazil hooked to the grid a total of 538.1 MW of new power generating capacity. Overall, the country had 193.9 GW of authorised power in operation, with the share of renewables reaching 83.64%.
