Once again, Germany’s newly installed solar capacity exceeded the gigawatt threshold, reaching 1.23 GW in October while onshore wind deployment achieved the highest level in 2023 with net new additions of 404 MW.
In the first ten months of 2023, new solar capacity across the country exceeded 11.7 GW with four federal states installing more than 1 GW. Bavaria remains the undisputed leader with 2.87 GW, followed by North Rhine-Westphalia with 1.79 GW, Baden-Wuerttemberg with 1.53 GW and Lower Saxony with 1.17 GW, according to data from the Federal Network Agency.
Only around 50 MW of the solar power plants launched in October were subsidy-free while about half of the subsidised systems, or 619 MW, were rooftop installations. Subsidised ground-mounted solar facilities commissioned in October totalled 560 MW.
The figure for the previous month was revised to reflect a higher capacity.
Onshore wind expansion also accelerated in October with newly installed capacity totalling 404 MW, up from 382 MW in the previous month. The gross onshore wind capacity in Germany reached 60.44 GW at the end of October. During the month, projects with a combined capacity of 402 MW obtained authorisation, contributing to a total of 5.96 GW for the first ten months of the year.
