Germany’s Hamburg Airport (HAM) is planning to spend around EUR 70 million (USD 76.6m) to build a wind park in order to ensure a green electricity supply for the airport.
The Heidmoor wind park, to be located near the German town of Kaltenkirchen, will consist of six turbines and is expected to power over 100 buildings and the entire infrastructure of Hamburg Airport, the company said on Tuesday.
The facility will be owned and operated by the airport’s newly established subsidiary, Sustainable Energy Solutions GmbH und Co KG (SES).
The wind park should start generating electricity for the airport from 2027/28.
The project is a key component of Hamburg Airport’s strategy to become carbon-neutral by 2035.
“The establishment of SES now signals that we are not wasting any time to make Hamburg Airport energy self-sufficient with wind power as quickly as possible. The next step, transferring the property to SES, is already a done deal,” SES’s co-head Johannes Scharnberg commented in the statement.
