India has more than 70 GW, precisely 70,096 MW, of cumulative installed solar power capacity as at June 30, 2023, according to information provided this week by Minister for New and Renewable Energy and Power R. K. Singh.

In terms of states the leader is Rajasthan with more than 17.8 GW, followed by Gujarat with more than 10.1 GW and Karnataka with more than 9 GW.

The minister noted that the government has various schemes to support solar energy, such as the Solar Park Scheme which aims to aid at least 50 solar parks and 40 GW of capacity, a scheme for deploying 12 GW of grid-connected solar projects by the government producers with Viability Gap Funding (VGF), and support for the installation of grid-connected solar rooftop power plants.

JMK Research recently reported that India commissioned 6,794 MW of solar power capacity in the first six months of the year, about 19% less than in the year-ago period. As of end-June, 129.6 GW of renewable power plants were in operation in India.

The country has set an ambitious target for 500 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2030.
