Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has launched a tender, seeking developers for offshore wind projects in two areas.
One of the sites offered in the country’s third offshore wind tender is located in the Sea of Japan, off Aomori prefecture and the second one is off the coast of the town of Yusa, Yamagata prefecture, the ministry said on Friday.
Interested developers can submit their proposals by July 19. The winners will be announced in December.
The two areas were designated for the development of offshore wind parks in October. The tender release follows a period of public comments held from November 17, 2023, to December 17, 2023, aimed at formulating guidelines for the public recruitment of entities to develop offshore wind power generation projects in these designated areas.
Japan’s offshore wind industry experienced significant progress in recent months. In December, the Japanese government selected three consortia to execute 1.4 GW of projects in its second offshore wind tender. This was followed by the inauguration of Japan’s largest commercial wind park, the 112-MW Ishikari Bay New Port offshore wind farm, at the beginning of 2024.
