Luxury and electrification collide as Cadillac’s flagship sedan, the Celestiq, begins its production journey for the 2024 model year. This opulent EV has been turning heads from the day it broke cover, with its stylish design, top-tier features, and impressive all-electric powertrain. Hand-built at the GM Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, the Celestiq is poised to redefine the luxury EV segment.
With a starting price around £275,000, the Celestiq is not for the faint of heart, and its exclusivity is emphasized by its availability through a waitlist only. While exact production numbers remain undisclosed, insiders suggest that Cadillac plans to craft between 100 and 150 units each year.
The Celestiq, often referred to as the “Halo of Cadillac,” showcases cutting-edge technology and features. However, skeptics may wonder if its price tag is justified, especially given the underwhelming 600 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque output, which could be considered modest for its segment. A sprint from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 3.8 seconds isn’t exactly slow but it might not entirely satisfy the speed enthusiasts.
Beyond its powertrain, what truly sets the Celestiq apart is its unparalleled level of customization. Customers can tailor this sedan to their exact preferences, choosing from a vast array of materials, finishes, colors, and more. The interior is a tech-savvy marvel, adorned with a multitude of digital screens.
The Celestiq rides on GM’s BEV3 platform, powered by the 111 kWh GM Ultium battery pack and two GM Ultium Drive motors. While these components provide respectable performance, critics question whether they match up to the standards set by other luxury EVs.
Cadillac’s claim of 300 miles of range on a single charge is impressive, and with a 200 kW DC fast charging system, the Celestiq can gain an additional 78 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
Despite the hefty price tag, the Celestiq reportedly sold out for the first 18 months of production within just a month of its unveiling in December 2022. With the likes of the Rolls-Royce Spectre EV as its only competitor in the ultra-luxury EV market, Cadillac has a unique opportunity to make a lasting impression.
