The government of Western Australia has awarded Lead Agency status to the 3-GW Leeuwin offshore wind project developed by Copenhagen Energy, the Danish company announced on Wednesday.

Copenhagen Energy explained in a press statement that the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation awards this status to “significant projects with the capacity to deliver jobs and development opportunities for the state,” providing them with assistance in connection with permitting across government agencies.

The company plans to erect up to 200 turbines in Commonwealth waters between Mandurah and Bunbury, with the combined capacity to supply some 3 million homes and businesses. The project also includes the installation of substations that are connected to land-based transmission stations.

“With the help of the department we look forward to progressing our project through the approvals and development processes to deliver a world-class offshore wind farm for WA,” commented Joy Francis-Hayes, Development Manager, Australia, at Copenhagen Energy.
