Dutch energy solutions provider Alfen has been selected by Vasa Vind to build a 20-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) for a wind farm in the Swedish municipality of Stromsund.
The contract marks Alfen’s first BESS co-located at a Swedish wind farm. The system is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024, according to a statement from Thursday.
The planned facility will be designed, engineered, installed and commissioned by Alfen, utilising the company’s TheBattery Elements industrial modular energy storage system for stationary applications. The Dutch firm will also take care of the site’s operation under a long-term service agreement.
Once operational, the BESS will connect to the same grid point as Vasa Vind’s wind farms in Stromsund.
In December, Vasa Vind announced that it had decided to add 20-MW storage systems to its wind farms in the municipality. The company also committed to making more similar investments in both its existing plants and upcoming large-scale projects.
