US e-commerce and expertise large Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) introduced at the moment it’s funding the world’s first commercial-scale seaweed farm situated between offshore wind generators as a part of a Dutch mission referred to as North Sea Farm 1.

Extra particularly, Amazon is offering a EUR-1.5-million (USD 1.6m) grant to a mission managed by a consortium of scientific researchers and companions led by non-profit organisation North Sea Farmers (NSF). The mission is seen to grow to be operational by the top of 2023.

The grant, coming from Amazon’s USD-100-million world Proper Now Local weather Fund, is meant for the creation of a first-of-a-kind seaweed farm spanning 10 hectares and for a 12 months’s scientific analysis into carbon discount via seaweed farming.

It’s estimated that if scaled, seaweed farming in Europe might minimize carbon dioxide (CO2) by hundreds of thousands of tonnes a 12 months by 2040. Along with that, seaweed can be utilized within the manufacturing of packaging, meals and clothes.

“Potentially, up to 85,000 full-time jobs could be created in the European seaweed sector by replicating North Sea Farm 1 across the North Sea, re-purposing the space amongst wind farms. These jobs would not only be in the farming process but also in the production and sales of seaweed-based products,” commented Eef Brouwers, Supervisor of Farming and Expertise at NSF.
