Swiss power producer and energy trader Axpo Holding AG said on Thursday that it plans to build a 10-MWp alpine solar plant in the municipality of Glarus Sued, making it its sixth such project in Switzerland.
The new array will be located in the same municipality that is now the home to Axpo’s 2.2-MWp alpine solar plant, which has been operational since August 2022.
The proposed 10-MWp solar farm will located in an area sitting at around 1,500 metres (4,921 ft) above sea level. The site spanning some 120,000 square metres (1.3m sq ft) will be populated with around 36,000 solar panels standing three metres above ground with an inclination of up to 70 degrees, Axpo said.
Once in operation, the alpine plant will be capable of generating around 13 GWh of electricity annually.
The latest alpine project is part of Axpo’s “solar offensive”, aimed at bringing the company’s solar power capacity to over 1.2 GW by 2030. Axpo plans to achieve this by installing solar panels in residential areas and in the Swiss Alps.
