The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) at the US Department of Interior said Monday it has completed its environmental review of the proposed 924-MW Sunrise Wind offshore wind project, which is being developed by Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) in partnership with Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES).
The project plan includes up to 94 wind turbines and infrastructure to connect to the grid in Holbrook, New York. BOEM said it developed a preferred alternative with fewer turbines, 84, “to accommodate geotechnical feasibility of the project, reduce impacts to benthic habitat and Atlantic cod, and meet the energy needs of New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.” The agency added it considers all alternatives in the development of its final decision.
BOEM intends to issue a Record of Decision in early 2024 on whether to approve the project and set any conditions of approval.
Sunrise Wind is one of the projects that in October were denied contract price increases by the New York State Public Service Commission (NYSPSC). It can now rebid in New York’s accelerated offshore wind solicitation.
When Ørsted announced a decision to cease development of the Ocean Wind 1 and 2 offshore wind projects in the US it said it awaited the conditions of the auction to determine whether to rebid Sunrise Wind. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) launched expedited solicitations for offshore wind and land-based renewable projects at the end of November.
