Chilean utility Colbun is seeking to develop a small-scale green hydrogen project to be able to use the clean gas at its Nehuenco thermoelectric power plant (TPP) in Chile’s Valparaiso region.

For a roughly USD-1-million (EUR 937,668) investment, the company will aim to install and operate its own electrolyser to replace some of the grey hydrogen it has to buy for the cooling process of Nehuenco’s units II and III.

Nehuenco is Colbun’s 887-MW natural gas-fired power plant with three generation units.

Announcing the project on Wednesday, Colbun said that the electrolyser will be powered by a 100-kW solar farm installed next to the Nehuenco complex. The green hydrogen production process will require only about 30 litres of water per day and will help the utility avoid the emission of nine tonnes of CO2 annually.

Colbun is currently gathering quotes for the equipment. Construction is planned to start at the beginning of 2024. Green hydrogen production would begin towards the end of 2024.
