Chile generated 41.8% of its electricity from non-conventional renewables in December 2023, slightly more than the 41.0% these sources contributed to the overall power production the month earlier.
According to the latest figures released by the Chilean national energy commission (CNE), the nation’s renewables, excluding large hydro, generated 3,005 GWh gross in December, marking an increase of 10.0% month-on-month. In year-on-year terms, the renewables output increased by 7.4%.
At the same time, gross power production from conventional sources reached 4,181 GWh, 6.5% more month-on-month, but also 6.0% less compared to December 2022.
The CNE’s power production figures for renewables are presented in the table below:
Technology: | Gross production in GWh: | month-on-month change: | year-on-year change: | Share in December 2023: |
Biomass | 190 | 27.2% | 20.1% | 6.3% |
Wind | 838 | -0.7% | 7.5% | 27.9% |
Solar PV | 1,741 | 17.9% | 7.3% | 57.9% |
Solar CSP | 0 | 0% | -100% | — |
Small run-of-river hydro | 195 | -11.7% | 9.8% | 6.5% |
Geothermal | 41 | -1.8% | 12.1% | 1.4% |
The total net installed non-conventional renewable energy capacity in Chile rose to 14,225 MW during the final month of the year from 14,121 MW in November. As the CNE’s latest report, non-conventional renewables represent 42.9% of the total net installed capacity in the country.
