German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE) has begun the construction of the onshore substation for the 1-GW Thor offshore wind farm project in the Danish North Sea.
The substation will be built in the municipality of Lemvig in western Denmark by Siemens Energy AG in cooperation with local engineering company MT Højgaard Danmark, RWE said today.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Thursday in the presence of representatives of the companies involved in the project, the Lemvig municipality and the Danish industry.
The Thor wind farm, Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date, will be built about 22 kilometres (13.68 miles) off the port of Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland. Equipped with 72 Siemens Gamesa turbines, the wind park is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027 and generate electricity corresponding to the consumption of more than one million Danish households. The installation of the machines at sea is planned to begin in 2026.
