Denmark’s Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) and Glennmont Partners on Monday officially launched the construction of the 913-MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.
Works will begin with the installation of 83 monopile foundations by marine infrastructure contractor Jan De Nul Group, the project owners announced. The up to 1,500-tone steel foundations will support 83 units of Siemens Gamesa’s SG 11.0-200 DD machines that are planned to be erected next year.
Borkum Riffgrund 3 will be located about 50 km (31.1 miles) off the coast of Lower Saxony, in proximity to Ørsted’s Borkum Riffgrund 1 and Borkum Riffgrund 2 wind farms. With commercial operations planned to be launched in 2025, the complex will become the largest offshore park by export capacity in Germany, according to the press release.
Ørsted sold a 50% stake in Borkum Riffgrund 3 to fund manager Glennmont Partners in February last year. The Danish energy major then agreed to perform full-scope engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) activities, maintain the wind farm for 20 years and provide a route to market for the future power output and green certificates.
Borkum Riffgrund 3 has in place corporate power purchase agreements (CPPAs) for a total of 786 MW with counterparties including Amazon, Google, BASF and RWE Group.
