The Danish Energy Agency on Monday said it has started a process to create a new bidding zone at the Bornholm Energy Island, which will serve as a collection point for 3 GW of offshore wind power.
Complying with the EU regulation, the new bidding zone is being established on the basis of a structural congestion identified by Danish transmission system operator Energinet in the power grid that will connect Bornholm Energy Island with the largest Danish island of Zealand and Germany.
The new bidding zone DK3 at Energio Bornholm will become effective with the commissioning of Bornholm Energy Island.
According to a note submitted by Energinet as part of a consultation process, which ended in November, DK3 should contain both Bornholm Energy Island and the rest of Bornholm, which would mean moving the existing generation and demand on the island of Bornholm from DK2 to DK3.
Energinet and 50Hertz recently started the tendering process for key equipment for the energy Island.
