Danish renewable energy company Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP) has submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a 504-MW floating offshore wind project off the Italian island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea.
The submission was made with the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security on behalf of the Ichnusa project’s owners, COP said earlier this week. The consortium behind the scheme includes Denmark’s Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, through its flagship funds, and GreenIT, a joint venture of Eni’s Plenitude (Eni) and CDP Equity.
To be located around 35 km off the coast, the Ichnusa project will create Sardinia’s first floating offshore wind farm. The scheme will support local supply chain development by the second half of the decade, with its development seen to contribute to Italy’s goal of having 20 GW of wind turbine capacity in operation by 2030.
Ichnusa is part of a 3-GW portfolio of floating wind projects that COP is developing in Italy, including two other schemes off Sardinia.
In March, GreenIT and CIP’s Flagship Funds entered into an agreement to jointly work on three floating wind projects in Italian waters, including an up-to-540-MW scheme off the coast of Civitavecchia, and two other totalling 1,500 MW off Sardinia.
