EDF Renewables North America, part of French utility EDF Group, has commissioned the 150-MWac Fox Squirrel Solar Phase 1 plant in the US state of Ohio alongside its partner, Canada’s Enbridge Inc (TSE:ENB).
The ground-mounted solar farm, with a peak capacity of 194 MWp in the first phase, is fully operational and feeding electricity into the PJM grid, the companies said in a joint statement on Wednesday.
Located in Madison County, the Fox Squirrel facility will have 577 MWac/749 MWdc once fully up and running, making it the largest solar complex in Ohio, and also the largest renewable energy project developed and built by EDF’s North American unit.
Two more phases are set to follow — Fox Squirrel 2 of 250 MWac/325 MWp, with operations expected to commence in mid-2024, and Fox Squirrel 3 of 177 MWac/230 MWp, planned for the end of 2024.
The project benefits from a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with a “strong investment grade counterparty”, which will off-take the entire production output.
Enbridge invested in the first phase of the project in late 2023, becoming a 50% partner. The Canadian energy company plans to reach final investment decision on the subsequent phase throughout 2024, assuming certain conditions are met, the statement said.
