EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA) has launched commercial operations at the 297-MW Sharp Hills wind farm in the Canadian province of Alberta, the unit of EDP Renovaveis SA (ELI:EDPR) said on Monday.
Located in the Special Areas municipality near the Sedalia and New Bridgen hamlets, the wind park will be run under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Canadian energy infrastructure company TC Energy Corp (TSE:TRP). The complex is powered by 67 V150 turbines of 4.5 MW and 4.3 MW each by Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems.
The project represents an investment of over CAD 600 million (USD 445.4m/EUR 408.4m). It was among the successful schemes awarded in a Canadian renewable energy tender, which enabled the developer to sign a renewable energy support agreement (RESA) with the Alberta Electricity System Operator (AESO) back in 2017.
Sharp Hills’ construction phase opened more than 400 full-time job positions, EDPR NA noted. The wind farm is the company’s third renewable energy site in Canada where it owns 427 MW of operating capacity.
