The Romanian arm of French telecoms giant Orange SA (EPA:ORA) will meet 30 GWh of its annual electricity consumption with solar power under a deal with the local arm of French energy major Engie SA (EPA:ENGI).
Orange Romania Group and Engie Romania have signed a six-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA), the mobile and Internet service provider said on Friday. The arrangement is part of Orange’s plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2040 and will back its Romanian companies’ goal for carbon neutrality by the same year.

Details about the contracted photovoltaic (PV) capacity were not available.
Last year, Orange Romania kicked off a four-year scheme to install solar panels at 300 network sites and four communication interconnection facilities and data centers. With the VPPA in place, Romania will be on the list with other countries where the Orange group is set to reach a 80% green energy level this year. These include Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Poland and Moldova.
