Danish renewables developer European Energy A/S has established a long-term strategic partnership with the Norwegian joint venture of Eni’s Plenitude and HitecVision, targeting a joint pursuit of offshore wind opportunities in the Baltic Sea.

The Copenhagen-based company said in a statement on Monday it will cooperate with Vargronn, whose offshore wind efforts, up until now, have been focusing on the North Sea. As of October, the Norwegian JV has a 20% interest in the world’s largest offshore wind project under construction – the 3.6-GW Dogger Bank in UK waters.

The pair will be considering developments in Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia, and will work together across the whole lifecycle of a project, from development and financing, through to construction and operation, according to the announcement.

“The Baltic states will undergo a rapid transformation in their energy supply in the coming years. In European Energy we want to support this transformation, and we believe that we can best do this by partnering up with Vargronn, who has extensive offshore expertise and strong financial capacity can build on their experience from offshore wind projects in the North Sea,” says Knud Erik Andersen, CEO in European Energy.

The Danish firm noted that the three Baltic states have a total of 15.4 GW of estimated capacity potential in offshore wind and that both Lithuania and Estonia are getting ready to launch tenders.
