Metsahallitus, which manages state-owned land and water areas in Finland, said today it is starting preparations for the tendering of two offshore wind farm projects with a combined potential capacity of 3 GW.
One of the projects will be located in the areas of Pyhajoki and Raahe municipalities, and the other offshore the city of Narpio. The relevant municipalities have approved zoning initiatives for the projects, which will be developed in state-owned areas of the Finnish territorial waters.
The tenders for the two projects will open in the autumn of 2023.
The Pyhajoki-Raahe and Narpio projects are the first of five that Metsahallitus has said it plans to launch.
According to Metsahallitus wind energy director Otto Swanljung, the prospect of a successful tendering process for project rights and lease rights is supported by a need for an industrial-scale offering of clean energy in nearby areas. “In addition, there are plans related to the development of the battery cluster and the hydrogen economy in the area,” added Otto Swanljung.
Permit processes for an offshore wind farm take five to seven years, followed by two to three years of construction, the state-owned enterprise specified.
