Portuguese energy group Galp Energia SGPS SA (ELI:GALP), has joined forces with French energy group TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) to explore the potential development of offshore wind projects in Portugal.
The partnership combines Galp’s local market expertise with TotalEnergies’ experience in developing offshore wind projects, the Portuguese firm said on Tuesday.
The initiative comes after the Portuguese government unveiled a plan to promote the development of 10 GW of offshore wind capacity in the coming years.
At present, the French company has over 550 MW of wind and solar energy under development in Portugal and operates with its affiliate Total Eren SA 545.1 MW of installed renewable energy capacity, including onshore wind, solar photovoltaic (PV,) and hydro.
Portugal’s plans for the development of offshore wind energy have attracted more developers in recent months. In May, Corio Generation announced it is teaming up with Portugal’s Hyperion Renewables to also explore offshore wind opportunities and take part in the country’s first tender of this type of technology.
