GE Vernova today unveiled a record order from US developer Pattern Energy to supply 2.4 GW of wind turbines for the SunZia Wind project in New Mexico.

Secured in the fourth quarter of 2023, the order calls for the provision of 674 units of the 3.6-154 wind turbine and long-term services. GE Vernova said this is its largest single onshore wind turbine order ever, both in terms of number of turbines and capacity.

SunZia Wind, described as the largest wind project in the Western Hemisphere, will have a total capacity of 3.5 GW. The remainder of the turbines will be provided by Vestas.

Financing for the project was closed at the end of December, with Pattern Energy then saying that the turbines will be supplied by GE Vernova and the Danish manufacturer.

The contract will take GE Vernova’s installed base with Pattern Energy in North America to 4.3 GW. It follows 18 months of collaboration between GE Vernova and Pattern Energy on the SunZia project.

“The project is a great example of how the policy certainty created by the IRA is helping to drive significant investments in the US wind power market,” said GE Vernova chief executive Scott Strazik.

GE says the 3.6-154 turbine is one of its next generation workhorse products, specifically tailored for the US market.

“This project demonstrates GE Vernova’s ability to deliver on our workhorse strategy in Onshore Wind – producing fewer variants in large quantities at scale to drive quality and reliability across the fleet for our customers,” commented Vic Abate, chief technology officer, GE and chief executive at GE Vernova’s Wind business.
