Gold Fields Limited (JSE:GFI) has secured the environmental approval to install a 7.3-MW/7.7-MWp solar farm at its Salares Norte gold-silver open pit mine in Chile, according to a resolution issued on Thursday.

The South Africa-based gold miner intends to operate the solar farm in conjunction with 22 MW of diesel generators, which were previously approved for installation. By hybridising solar power and diesel, Gold Fields stands to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 10% to 15% compared to just running the 22-MW diesel-fuelled plant alone, the resolution stated.

Investment in the solar project is estimated to be USD 10 million (EUR 9.4m). The company will use over 14,680 bifacial solar panels to assemble the plant within its Salares Norte mine in the region of Atacama.
