Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) said on Thursday that it will repower its first four onshore wind farms in Spain to increase their average power production by 30% with new high-capacity turbines.
With the use of more powerful machines, the overall turbine count across the four facilities will slashed by 199.
The repowering projects will be carried out at the 49-MW Muras and the 18.5-MW Serra da Panda wind farms in the Spanish region of Galicia, and the 49.5-MW Molar de Molinar and the 48-MW Isabela wind farms in Castile-La Mancha.
All four wind farms have been in operation for more than 20 years. The oldest of them is Muras, which was commissioned in 1998.
Once rejuvenated, Muras will have 11 wind turbines of 4.3 MW instead of today’s 74 units of 660 kW, Iberdrola said. At Serra da Panda, the company will replace 24 turbines with five new machines.
In Castile-La Mancha, Molar de Molinar will go from being equipped with 75 660-kW turbines to having 11 units of 4.5 MW. At Isabela, 64 750-kW turbines will be replaced with 11 new units — six of 4.5 MW and five of 4.2 MW.
These projects received financial support from the Spanish state as part of the first call for grants under the Circular Repowering programme, Ibedrola said.
