Spanish solar power solutions firm Opengy has launched construction of a 10.11-MWp distributed generation (DG) solar farm in the autonomous community of Madrid, hailing it as the first ground-mounted solar photovoltaic project in Spain’s capital region to secure approval to connect to the distribution grid.
The solar farm, dubbed Neosol, will be located in the municipality of Villanueva del Pardillo at a site covering ten hectares of land. With 14,588 photovoltaic modules mounted on fixed structures, the plant will be able to generate around 16,822 MWh per year on average, Opengy said in a press release on Friday.
The Neosol project was developed by Spanish renewables promoter Nexer, which finalised the permitting in December 2023. At some point, Nexer sold the project to Madrid-based alternative investor Millennium Green Investment Group, according to Opengy.
Laura del Hierro, General Manager of Nexer, said that her company believes in small-scale DG solar due to its low impact on land occupation, population and biodiversity.
“This model makes even more sense in the Community of Madrid, a small but highly populated autonomous region with almost 50% of its surface area under some form of environmental protection, as well as being a major centre of electricity consumption,” del Hierro stated.
