The Mercedes EQS SUV 580 is a full-size crossover with three rows that should be an echelon of electric luxury and opulence. It shares a platform with the EQS sedan, but the SUV adds way more interior space, a third row of seating and bigger cargo area. Our own detailed review of the EQS SUV 580 is coming very soon, but as we wait for it let’s look at its consumption in the real world.

The model we are testing is the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV 580 4Matic, which produces 400 kW (536 hp) and 858 Nm of torque. These are impressive figures, but more so is the usable battery capacity of 118 kWh. However, being so gigantic, the EQS SUV will surely be in a disadvantage position when it comes to consumpion.

Our testing was conducted in the dry and at 16°C, which is almost perfect weather. Let’s look at what we measured on the test routes, which include driving at constant speeds at the same place with each car we test.

The results speak for themselves and it is imminently noticeable that the gigantic size and weight of the EQS SUV 580 increase its consumption drastically. The energy required to move this behemoth of a vehicle through traffic is colossal, but the big battery compensates and enables sufficient range at all times.

At our lowest testing speed of 60 km/h the EQS SUV 580 scores solidly, which means its on-board technology and drivetrain are generally efficient. At that speed aerodynamics don’t play as much of a role, so the huge body is not taking as big a toll.

Once we move on to the next speed of 90 km/h we notice a big increase in consumption. This is mostly due to the size, but can is also partially due to the grippy tires, which have a lot of resistance and more efficient ones might enable slightly better results.

At the highest testing speed of 130 km/h the EQS SUV has to use up a lot of its energy in order to maintain the momentum. Thankfully, the huge battery allows for satisfactory range even with such consumption.

Even though we had great conditions, the EQS SUV was no range champion. Since it’s also the biggest vehicle on our list this is somewhat understandable. It is also worth noting that when you’re shopping for a vehicle with a pricetag of around €150,000, efficiency might not be your biggest concern, but rather other qualities that we’ll discuss in our detailed review.
