In early 2024, the automotive landscape in the UK is set to witness a new entrant, the Omoda 5 SUV. The Chinese manufacturer is all set to take on established makers with this family-sized SUV.

The Omoda 5 is slightly shorter than the VW ID.4, but longer than the Hyundai Kona. It will initially be available as an all-electric vehicle, powered by a 61 kWh battery, boasting a range of 280 miles. However, a hybrid option is expected to join the lineup later. Safety-conscious buyers will be pleased to know that the Omoda 5 holds a five-star Euro NCAP rating, earned last year.

The Noble trim level of the Omoda 5 impresses with a bold front grille, although the EV variant will adopt a cleaner design. Red styling accents, found on the side mirrors and 18-inch alloy wheels, add a touch of sportiness. The SUV’s profile is undeniably rakish for its segment, complete with a blacked-out C-pillar that creates a ‘floating roof’ effect.

The interior has elegant finish and the company claims it will rival the best in the class with its build quality. While some hard plastics can be found in certain areas, most touchpoints feature dense, padded materials.

The Omoda 5 boasts an Android-based infotainment system with Apple CarPlay support. A voice assistant can perform various vehicle functions, while an eight-speaker sound system, courtesy of Sony, ensures a high-quality audio experience. Add to it adjustable ambient lighting that reflects the car’s different driving modes and we have an intriguing package.

The dashboard features a pair of 10.25-inch displays, one for infotainment and the other for driver instruments. Omoda has wisely retained physical buttons for heating and ventilation controls, though.

The rear claims to comfortably fit six-footers, and headroom remains comfortable despite the slightly sloping roofline and sunroof. The 13.4 ft³ boot capacity is on par with a Volkswagen ID.3, and the minimal load lip ensures ease of loading.

With an entry point of £24,000 in the UK, Omoda 5 undercuts the competitors, which might be its key weapon. One challenge that Omoda faces is building a suitable dealer network in the UK. Matthew Upton, the UK branding manager, has set an ambitious target of having 50 outlets in place by March, coinciding with the Omoda 5’s expected launch. This extensive network will be crucial for reaching potential customers.

The Omoda 5 is just the beginning of Omoda’s foray into the UK market. The Jaecoo 7, a larger and more premium SUV offering, is set to follow, with a choice of petrol or plug-in-hybrid powertrains.
