Denmark’s Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) and UK firm Highview Power have found that there is value in combining offshore wind and Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES), according to an announcement today.
The two companies have completed their study into pairing the technologies, which has shown that using LAES with offshore wind can help reduce wind curtailment, increase productivity and support the transition to a zero carbon grid. The analysis covered technical performance, route to planning approval and route to market. Based on it, the companies are of the view that a project can be developed and built aligned with the timeline of an offshore wind farm.
Ørsted and Highview Power will submit their findings into the UK government’s “Long Duration Energy Storage” consultation process.
“Together our technologies can be a catalyst to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and help unlock the economic potential of that transition for the UK,” said Duncan Clark, managing director UK & Ireland for Ørsted.
