Pattern Energy Group LP has selected Quanta Services Inc (NYSE:PWR) and Hitachi Energy as contractors for its huge SunZia transmission and wind project.
Described as the largest renewable energy infrastructure project in US history, the initiative includes 3,500 MW of new wind generation in Torrance, Lincoln and San Miguel Counties in New Mexico and a 550-mile (805 km) line capable of transporting 3,000 MW between central New Mexico and south-central Arizona.
Quanta will provide a turnkey solution for the SunZia Transmission line, while Hitachi Energy will deliver the HVDC converter stations.
Blattner Company, a Quanta operating company, will provide turnkey solutions for the SunZia Wind facility and related switchyard.
In a separate announcement, Quanta said that preconstruction activities on both projects have begun, with construction expected to kick off in the fourth quarter of 2023 and completion seen by the end of 2025.
The developer said it continues to work with federal agencies including the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), as well as local jurisdictions and stakeholders, on completing remaining approvals so that construction can start on schedule this year.
SunZia Transmission will use the same corridor as the Western Spirit Transmission line, also developed by Pattern Energy, and will allow SunZia Wind to supply customers in Arizona and California at times of high demand in early evening hours when there is not much renewable power.
Pattern Energy recently said that the SunZia transmission and wind project could generate USD 20.5 billion (EUR 18.6bn) in total economic benefit.
