Portugal’s renewable energy plants generated enough electricity to meet 49% of the Iberian country’s consumption in April, the national grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) announced this week.
While taking into consideration the first four months of 2023, renewable energy covered 67% of the nation’s needs. Hydro and wind power plants were the top contributors, with 29% and 26%, respectively. Biomass and solar photovoltaic (PV) energy followed each with a share of 6%.
REN’s data show that electricity from natural gas accounted for 18% of Portugal’s consumption since the beginning of the year, while the last 15% was covered by imported energy.
Portugal’s gross power consumption went down by 5.6% year-on-year in April as temperatures exceeded the normal level for this time of the year, the grid operator noted.
