German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE) on Tuesday announced a name for its floating wind project of up to 1.6 GW offshore California.
The project, awarded to the company in a federal offshore lease auction about a year ago, will be called Canopy Offshore Wind Farm. It is expected to be in operation by the mid-2030s.
To be built 28 miles (45 km) off the coast of Humboldt County, the wind farm is expected to be able to power more than 600,000 homes.
RWE plans to open a local office in downtown Eureka in early 2024 and has already hired three employees to engage with Tribal Nations, the community and stakeholders.
The project’s name is inspired by the region’s redwoods. “The name, Canopy, is our nod to the region’s iconic redwoods and a look forward to a future where Humboldt is home to a world-class offshore wind project that will provide new economic opportunities, including green jobs for the region, and power a clean grid,” said Canopy Offshore Wind Farm project director Rob Mastria.
