Germany’s RWE Renewables has installed a 120-metre-high (393.7 ft) wind measurement mast in the Laguna Blanca commune, southernmost Chile, as part of the development of the gigantic Vientos Magallanicos wind power and green hydrogen project in that part of the South American country.

The company is currently installing a second met mast and conducting studies in archaeology, palaeontology, and bird life in order to prepare a robust environmental impact study for the project, local media reported RWE Renewables as saying, about a year after the initiative was unveiled.

Vientos Magallanicos is a proposed complex comprising around 1 GW to 1.1 GW of wind turbines and 835 MW of electrolysers for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia. RWE Renewables, a unit of German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE), aims to produce around 475,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually at the facilities and export the fuel to international markets.

In parallel with the on-site activities, the company also carried out technical studies on the best methods to transport the fuels, and began work on the project’s feasibility study, local press reported.

The campaign comes on top of RWE’s participation in the joint development agreement with Chilean state-owned petroleum company Enap and other parties with the goal of transforming Enap’s Gregorio terminal into a substantial industrial complex in the Magallanes region, Loreto Rivera, New Business and Stakeholders Director at RWE Renewables, was quoted as saying.

The Vientos Magallanicos facilities are expected to start operations at the end of 2030.
