The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore has granted conditional awards to five projects to import 2 GW of solar power from Indonesia, where a total of 11 GWp of photovoltaic (PV) plants and some 21 GWh of energy storage are set to be installed progressively.
EMA said in a statement that these awards build on two existing energy cooperation pacts between Indonesia and Singapore, as well as a newly-signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) on low-carbon energy and cross-border electricity interconnection between Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry.
The table below gives more information about the new awardees.
Company | Import Capacity |
Pacific Medco Solar Pte Ltd, formed by PacificLight Renewables Pte Ltd, Medco Power Global Pte Ltd and Gallant Venture Ltd | 0.6 GW |
Adaro Solar International Pte Ltd, formed by PT Adaro Clean Energy Indonesia | 0.4 GW |
EDP Renewables APAC | 0.4 GW |
Vanda RE Pte Ltd, formed by Gurin Energy Pte Ltd and Gentari International Renewables Pte Ltd | 0.3 GW |
Keppel Energy Pte Ltd | 0.3 GW |
These companies will now carry out their marine survey on the proposed route for their subsea power cables, the announcement says.
Pacific Medco Solar confirmed its success in a separate statement, saying that it has been cleared to import 600 MW of price-competitive solar power from Bulan Island in Indonesia. The company will source the electricity from a new 2-GWp solar power complex with 500 MW of battery storage that should be completed by 2028.
With the latest awards, Singapore has a total of 3 GW of conditionally-approved power import deals, as in March 2023 it also authorised Keppel Energy to import 1 GW from Cambodia. This means that the country is now 1 GW away from achieving its 2035 target for up to 4 GW of low-carbon electricity imports.
