Spain’s renewables generated more electricity in the year to date than during the whole of 2022, Spanish power grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) said on Tuesday.
Between January 1 and November 17, Spain produced 116,844 GWh of electricity from renewable sources, surpassing the figure for all of 2022, which was 116,695 GWh.
This achievement is partly attributed to favourable weather conditions that have boosted the output of hydroelectric, solar photovoltaic, and wind energy installations. By November 20, hydro power plants, solar and wind farms increased their output by 39.4%, 32% and 2%, respectively, compared to the same period a year ago.
The surge in hydro in 2023 is particularly noteworthy, as it follows a year of exceptionally low rainfall that resulted in the lowest hydro power output on record, REE said.
Currently, renewables account for 49.9% of the total electricity produced in Spain in 2023. During the first 20 days of November, the renewables share in Spain’s total electricity production rose to 61.6%.
REE also highlighted November 3 as the day renewables accounted for an unprecedented 73.3% of the country’s total daily electricity production.
