Volvo and Polestar have some bad news today. Both the Volvo EX90 and the Polestar 3 are delayed. While production for both was supposed to start in 2023, it’s now been pushed to the first quarter of 2024 (which means January to March).
Polestar says it was “recently informed that additional time for final software development of the new all-electric platform shared by Volvo Cars is needed”.
Volkswagen has had its fair share of software-related issues, and now it seems like Volvo and Polestar are unfortunately experiencing their own.
According to Volvo’s press release on the matter, the “EX90 is a very exciting and important car for Volvo Cars, representing the start of a new era for the company and introduces a new generation of technology – hardware and software”.
While “demand for the Volvo EX90 remains high”, in order to “ensure a high-quality introduction of the car and to maximize customer benefit from its technology from day 1, Volvo Cars needs additional time in software development and testing”. That pretty much spells it out.
The EX90 previously “sold out its entire production for this year” – an announcement which in retrospect sounds hilarious. The order books did close, however, so maybe now they’ll reopen, considering that there was less time for manufacturing under the original schedule in 2023 than there is under the revised schedule in 2024.
