In what can only be described as one of the most anticipated events this year, Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant, has officially revealed its first electric vehicle, the SU7. With ambitions to rival the likes of Porsche and Tesla, Xiaomi’s foray into the electric car arena may raise some eyebrows, but after a closer look, it seems Xiaomi has what it takes to upset the status quo.

The base Xiaomi SU7, standing for Speed Ultra, comes with promises to be a performance beast, drawing rear-wheel drive motor producing 299 PS output and 400 Nm torque. It does the 0-62 mph in 5.28s before reaching a top speed of 130 mph. The CLTC range is 415 miles.

The dual-motor version is dubbed SU7 Max and has combined horsepower of 673 hp (495 kW), and peak torque of 618 lb-ft. Xiaomi claims an impressive 0 to 62 mph sprint time of 2.78 seconds, outpacing both the Porsche Taycan Turbo and Tesla Model S (not Plaid). The range on this one is 497 miles.

Measuring at 196.7 inches in length, 77.3 inches in width, and 57.3 inches in height, the SU7 positions itself as a mid-to-large-sized sedan, comfortably mimicking Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S. Xiaomi aims to distinguish itself even further from competitors with a wind resistance of Cd 0.195, purportedly the lowest among production cars globally.

Fueling this electric beast is the 800V Qilin Battery from CATL, featuring a capacity of 101 kWh. Xiaomi claims that a 5-minute charge can provide a range of 137 miles, while a 15-minute charge extends that to 317 miles. The battery details of the lesser SU7 version weren’t revealed.

The smart cockpit of the SU7, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip, is equipped with a 16.1-inch center screen boasting 3K resolution. The smart driving system is running on two Nvidia Orin X chips with a total computing power of 508 TOPS.

Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, sets the bar high, saying his company aims to be among the top five global car manufacturers in 15-20 years. But in the shorter term the company wants to be a top-tier player in the smart driving space by 2024.

The only bits yet to be detailed are the pricing of the two models and the start of deliveries. We hope Xiaomi will fill us in on those soon after the turn of the year.
