Grid-scale battery storage developer Yadlamalka Energy Pty Ltd announced it has wrapped up the civil works and has started the commissioning of a 2-MW/8-MWh vanadium flow battery (VFB) installed at an existing solar farm in South Australia.
The AUD-22-million (USD 14.9m/EUR 13.5m) project, dubbed Spencer Energy, was first presented in 2020 and it is the first of its kind in Australia.
The medium-duration battery will charge from excess electricity produced by the co-located 6-MWp solar plant when the sun is at its peak and potentially from off-peak imports from the grid, Yadlamalka Energy said in a statement this week.
Spencer Energy is equipped with battery systems provided by Invinity Energy Systems Plc which won the order in November 2020. The project was backed by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) with a AUD-5.7-million funding.
