German renewables developer BayWa r.e. AG has secured planning approval from the Scottish government to realise the 70-MW Corriegarth 2 wind farm project in the Scottish Highlands, the company’s UK team said on Thursday.
BayWa r.e. UK Ltd worked on the project from inception to consent, developing it as an extension to the already operational Corriegarth wind farm near Inverness. The first Corriegarth is owned by Greencoat UK Wind plc (LON:UKW), which collaborated with BayWa r.e. UK on the development of the extension as Corriegarth 2 will take advantage of existing access and grid infrastructure.
The Corriegarth 2 wind farm will be located near Gorthleck and south-east of Foyers. Its construction is expected to commence in 2025, while commissioning and operation are planned for 2026.
The new wind project is expected to funnel around GBP 11 million (USD 13.9m/EUR 12.7m) into the Highland economy, with GBP 32 million spent in Scotland overall, BayWa r.e. UK calculates.
Once in operation, Corriegarth 2 will generate enough electricity to cover around 82% of the domestic electricity demand in Inverness.
(GBP 1.0 = USD 1.268/EUR 1.154)
