Deep Wind Offshore is applying for a permit to build and operate an offshore wind farm of up to 70 wind turbines in Sweden, the Norwegian offshore wind developer said over the weekend.
The project, called Olof Skotkonung, is located in the Gulf of Bothnia off the southern Swedish coast, northeast of Gavleborg and Uppsala counties. It would be capable of generating 7.5 TWh a year, helping to power the two counties with clean electricity and supporting the decarbonisation of large emitters in the area.
Deep Wind Offshore chief executive Knut Vassbotn sees large potential for offshore wind in Sweden. He said that submitting the application is a milestone for the company, which has been working on two areas the last two years. Vassbotn added that the Swedish projects are excellent for both electricity generation and hydrogen production.
Deep Wind Offshore, whose owners include Knutsen Group, Haugaland Kraft, Sunnhordland Kraftlag and Octopus Energy, says it has a portfolio of over 10 GW, with 2 GW under exclusive development in South Korea. It has partnerships with bp in South Korea and EDF Renewables in Norway.
