In 1974, Volkswagen’s introduction of the Golf marked a revolutionary shift in the automotive landscape, replacing the legendary Beetle with front-wheel drive and a versatile design. Fast forward to its 50th birthday in 2024, and the Golf is gearing up for another transformation.

The company promises a global premiere of the mid-life refresh in just a few short weeks. This will be the last generation to also feature gasoline-powered version with the ninth generation, slated initially for 2030 going fully electric.

50 years and 8 generations of VW Golf

The 2024 refresh promises a host of upgrades – new looks, new powertrains, and new infotainment. All areas that VW desperately needs to address if it wants to retain its sizeable market share. VW hasn’t shared much specifics for the upcoming refresh, but we are certainly hoping the e-Golf retired in 2021, will make a comeback.

Thomas Schafer, head of the Volkswagen brand, already confirmed that the company won’t invest in a new combustion engine generation for the Golf after the current version completes its life cycle. The decision reflects Volkswagen’s shift from traditional combustion engines to the cost-effective development of electric vehicles. With an ambitious goal of 80% electric sales in Europe and 55% in North America by 2030, the company is set on reshaping its identity in the evolving automotive landscape.

Contrary to speculations about retiring the iconic Golf name, Volkswagen plans to keep it alive in the electric realm. Schafer hinted at a future electric model carrying the Golf name, possibly by 2028, as part of the brand’s plan to launch 10 new electric models by 2026. This move aims to preserve the brand equity associated with the Golf name, recognized by millions of Volkswagen enthusiasts worldwide.

The ID.2all concept, a nod to the Golf’s design heritage, is in the pipeline. Expected to go into production in 2026, this concept incorporates design cues from previous Golf versions and is likely to be part of the evolving ID.Golf lineup. While the exact name remains uncertain, the association with the Golf brand is poised to continue, capitalizing on its enduring popularity and recognition.
