Toyota shared its ambitious plans to produce next-gen and solid-state batteries with extended range back in September, but reportedly, the solid-state batteries will be in short supply initially. The latest report has it only a few thousand units will be produced using the breakthrough technology.

Or maybe “breakthrough” is a bit overstated. Toyota’s plans are to produce two versions of the battery – one with 20% longer range than today’s Toyota EVs (which isn’t much) and one with 50% improvement. To put things into perspective, the standard range option will supposedly hit 621 miles and the higher-tier variant is touted to reach 745 miles, by CLTC’s standards, which we all know are a bit too optimistic.

The good news is that these batteries will charge in just 20 minutes and that we can actually call a breakthrough. Sadly, these solid-state cells will come in limited quantity when they hit the market in 2027-2028.

As for its so-called “next-gen” batteries, Toyota is working on two versions – a popularized one and a performance version. The former should offer a 20% increase in range compared to the bZ4X, which puts the CLTC estimation to 458 miles. It will include LFP batteries and reduce the manufacturing cost by 40%. The first cars to come out with the said battery tech are scheduled for 2026-2027.

The performance alteration will offer a driving range of 620 miles, again going by CLTC standards and production cost will still go down but by 20%.

Additionally, the company is developing a high-performance battery with a bipolar structure and high nickel cathode. Autonomy is said to be improved by a modest 10%, but that’s to be expected given that performance is the priority.
